Lets talk teeth …..

I can’t believe that this is the first blog I have written about teeth!  Because in real life, I am a registered dental nurse with over 30 years experience.

Today’s post is really about informing you about some things that might save you money in the long term with regards maintaining and enhancing your teeth.

I am not a fan of the “American Smile”, where all teeth are toilet bowl white and so uniform, that they look completely unnatural.  It never ceases to amaze me that so many people want to look exactly the same as each other. Vive la difference!

That aside, there are a lot of things that can be done to improve your smile.  One quite simple thing, is to whiten your teeth.  There are lots of programmes and information out there with various methods for whitening teeth.  In my experience, the cheapest and MOST effective way is to have whitening trays made by a dentist, and to do the whitening   at home yourself.  A lot of practices advocate the use of laser/zoom whitening and claim that the teeth will go 6 shades lighter in one sitting.  I have to say that I haven’t found this to be the case.  Also, this treatment usually comes with the patient being given home trays to continue the process at home.  I would say, save yourself the expense of the laser treatment and just go for the home trays.

The problem with the laser whitening is that it dehydrates the teeth temporarily, making them look lighter than they are.  Also the cost of laser whitening is way more expensive than just for home trays,

In the practice that I work in, we use a whitening gel that contains 16% carbamide peroxide, and usually a week of whitening for an hour a day, will lighten the teeth by several shades.

Something else that bothers me, is the electric toothbrush.  Don’t get me wrong, I am an avid  supporter of the electric toothbrush, but it is the crazy prices that are being charged for them.  A while ago, many bloggers were featuring a new toothbrush that all the bells and whistles, it connected to your i-phone and told you how well you were doing in the tooth cleaning department.  This is all well and good, but at around £300 for a brush that is in effect, just the same as a £30 brush I found quite amazing.  Anyway, I would say, save your money and get a cheaper brush.

Probably the best thing to do to keep a healthy smile, is to visit your dentist and hygienist every six months, clean your teeth at least twice a day (especially before bed), limit your sugar intake to prevent cavities.

I would be happy to answer any questions that you have with regard to this blog.

Have a great week.

Honestly, I have been trying to curb my spending in the beauty department, but I seemed to have failed yet again.  I tell myself it is so I can review it for the blog, which is true, but also I like make-up and skincare, so I like to try new products.

Anyway, these are some of the items I have bought this month.

I recently discovered Sukin as a brand, and I am very impressed with what I have tried.  They are an Australian company and there products are vegan a do not contain any nasties.  This cleanser is water-soluble, so can be rinsed off or, as I prefer, to use a warm, damp face cloth.

L’Oreal have brought out a load of new products this month, so I picked up a few items to try.

Bonjour Nudista is a medium/light coverage BB Cream that gives a radiant no make-up look to the skin.  I got the shade medium and it does what it says on the tin.

I also got the Infallible Longwear Shaping Stick in 001 Sexy Flush which is a highlighter and 502 Gold is Gold blusher.  These are both very smooth and creamy and blend easily into the skin.

Last, but definitely not least, from Guerlain, the Terracotta Light (The sun kissed healthy glow powder) in shade 03 Natural Warm.  This is beautiful and I have been using it everyday since I bought it.

I think I also bought some other bits and pieces this month, but who’s counting!

Have a great week.

March Glossybox …

This month’s Glossybox is all about Spring.  Hmmm!  did somebody forget to tell the Glossybox team, that Spring will be delayed this year until further notice!!

This is an overnight mask from the Dutch company Mudmasky.  It contains Rose Water to help induce sleep and fresh, natural ingredients to hydrate and nourish the skin.  The make their facemarks fresh on the first Tuesday of every month, and no facemask is older than 3 months when leaving the factory.

This is a facial scrub that contains volcanic sand  and is manufactured in France.  I need to do a bit more research on this product as some of the ingredients I would like to know more about.  Slightly concerned that they use Polymethyl Methacrylate which is also known as a plastic glass.  Not sure why this is present in this product.

This is a matte primer that claims to minimise pores and create a shear complexion prior to the application of foundation.  We will see.  I have tried this on the back of my hand and it is indeed matte and does not feel at all like silicone or slippery.

This is quite a pale nude lipstick, a little too pale for me.  It is a semi-matte lipstick with a satin finish.  It does feel comfortable on the lips, but not the colour for me, unfortunately.

This is a sheet mask, designed for the mornings to give the skin a fresh start to the day.  It contains Peppermint Leaf Water to purify and sooth stressed skin.  Sound great, and I am looking forward to trying this one.

I am thinking of trying another beautybox instead of Glossybox.  If anybody has any recommendations, I would love to hear them.

Have a great week everyone.

March Favourites …

This month, I have been pretty consistent in using all of these products.  They have all been purchased recently, with the exception of the Bourjois CC Cream, which is a re-purchase.

Recently I have subscribed to Beauty Pie, and I have to say, I am so impressed with the quality of the products from them.  I have been using the Great Skin Foundation since it arrived and I really love it.

I have also been using the Bourjois CC Cream on days when I want a slightly lighter coverage, and this is also a great product.  Occasionally I have used them together, with the CC Cream as a base for the Beauty Pie foundation.

The By Terry Cellularose Brightening CC Serum is absolutely gorgeous, and leaves the skin with a luminous glow.  I use this under foundation, mainly for evenings out or special occasions as it is quite expensive.

Benefit’s Rockateur blusher leaves a shimmer of deep coral on the cheeks and I have been using this more and more this month.  fullsizeoutput_892

Dior released their Lip Glow balms this month and my favourite is the 006 shade Berry.  This leaves a sheer gloss on the lips with a hint of colour. Lush.

Finally, I have been using Armani Because It’s You (Don’t like the name) but like the fragrance!

Well, the snow has finally cleared and hopefully Spring is not too far away.  Enjoy your week.

Evening Make-up ….

I recently attended a preview evening of an art exhibition in St Ives.  This is the make-up I wore on that evening.

After my usual skin preparation I applied a recently purchased product from By Terry. The Cellularose Brightening Serum is a great product for brightening and luminising the skin prior to foundation.

On top of the serum, I used the Great Skin Foundation in shade 300 Beige from Beauty Pie.  This foundation gives great coverage and is very long lasting.

I used the Smashbox Photo Finish Under Eye Primer and then the L’Oreal True Match concealer under my eyes (Shade Ivory).

Eyebrows next, and I am currently using the Superbrow Precision Pencil in shade Baked Brown from Beauty Pie, and then set the brows with Eyeko’s brow gel.

On my eyes, I used an Essence palette 01 Glow For It.  Using all four shades on the left of the palette.  These are great shadows that blend easily and such an affordable product. I used the dark brown shade as an eyeliner on the top lid.

On my waterline, I used Urban Decay’s Waterline Eye  Pencil in Mood.  This is a dark grey.

Mascara is my current favourite from Benefit, the BAD gal BANG Mascara.  I absolutely love this mascara – great if you like thick lashes.

Bronzer is from Hourglass, Ambient Lighting Bronzer in Diffused Bronze Light.  The Perfect shade.   The blusher is from the Body Shop 02 Coral, which also contains a highlighter.

Finally, the lips were outlined in Beauty Pie’s Moisture-Lock Wonderful Lip Liner in shade Reckless Red.  The lipstick is also from Beauty Pie in shade Pin Up in the satin finish.

Hope you like the look.  Quite a simple look with a bold lip.

By Terry Cellularose Brightening CC Serum and Beauty Pie Great Skin Foundation ….

I have recently subscribed to Beauty Pie, which is a company that sells high-end products at a very affordable price.  For £10 a month you can purchase their products for a fraction of the normal retail cost.  Check them out on http://www.beautypie.com.  This month I thought I would try the Great Skin Foundation as I have heard great reports from fellow bloggers on how good it was.

Well, it didn’t disappoint.  This is a great foundation.  It applies really well and can definitely hold its own against any of the top brand foundations, like Chanel, Dior or Armani.  The shade I got was 300 (Beige) and would say this shade is great for medium skin tones.  This foundation normally retails at £30 but if you subscribe it costs £6.30.

Another product that I have been wanting to try is the Cellularose Brightening CC Serum from By Terry.  I was a little undecided as to which shade to choose, but went for the Shade 4 Sunny Flash.  When it arrived, I thought it might be too dark for me, but when applied it was fine.  It is their darkest shade, and the other shades look good if you prefer a more pink or light shade.

If you have a perfect, young skin, you could wear this on its own, but it is also great for layering under a foundation, which is what I prefer.  It is a gorgeous product and I loved the effect, but it is quite pricey at around £70.  A good dupe for this would be the L’Oreal True Match Highlight in Golden Glow at £8.99.

So, I was pleased with both products, but I have only been using them for a few days, so I need to try them out for a bit longer.  I did try the By Terry serum with a different foundation ( the Micro-Mineral Serum Foundation from Beauty Pie, which is also a great foundation), but it didn’t like it at all, and it did not blend well and the foundation rolled into balls.  So it might be a bit hit and miss with some foundations.

This is both products on the skin.  You can see that the By Terry serum gives a glow under the foundation.

That’s it for this week guys.

lots of love, Gail xxx

This is not a sponsored post and both products were purchased by me.

February Glossybox – What’s in it?…

A great selection of products this month from Glossybox.

I do love a Ciate nail polish and the colour I had in the box is Racing Queen, which is a gorgeous dark green.  I think it is pretty random what colour you get as there are various colours being sent out.

There have been several lip tint/balms in recent months, but this is a little different in that it is a nude shade, which I really like – it is very hydrating and moisturising and a great colour.

This is something a bit different, a mist that primes, refreshes and hydrates and can also be used to set your make-up.  An excellent product to pop in your handbag for when you need to refresh your make-up.

I find that some palettes usually have several shades that I would never use, but I would definitely use all the shades in this eyeshadow palette.  There are three matte shades and nine shimmer shades.  There is also a great mirror in the lid – always a bonus.

This is a black, waterproof mascara from Icona Milano and it claims to be smudge proof, and water and humidity resistant.  I haven’t tried it yet, but I have used the brand before and liked the products I have tried.  I will report back on this one.  This normally retails at £15 so it is great to have the full size mascara.

Well, that’s it for this week – I hope you all enjoyed Valentine’s day, even if like me, you are single.

Enjoy the week ahead,

lots of love, Gail xxx
