January’s Glossybox review …

fullsizerender-192

January’s Glossybox is inspired by the New Year and a popular resolution of eating healthily.   They have worked with Bella Younger aka Deliciously Stella, and have used some of her irreverent quotes in their literature on the products.

NIP+FAB KALE FIX MOISTURISER

This moisturiser contains kale, watercress, almond oil, shea butter and aloe vera.  It is very hydrating and sinks quickly into the skin.  It has a very fresh and clean smell similar to cucumber.

UNANI IL-LUMINATE MILK CLEANSER

This is a brand I am totally unfamiliar with, Unani are a family run Spanish company that uses natural and organic ingredients in their products.  Having looked at their web page, I like their mission statement and will look forward to trying this cleanser and maybe some of their other products.

VITAMASQUES MANUKA HONEY

This is a Korean hydrating and moisturising sheet face mask that contains nourishing Manuka Honey.  I use a face mask at least once a week, so really excited to try this one.  They normally come in a box of 4 for £12.99.

THE BALM MEET MATT(E)TRIMONY EYESHADOW

This is a beautiful deep aubergine shade that is super soft and smooth, and easily bendable.  Thumbs up from me.

HAIRON ZERO CREASE HAIR TIES

These hair ties are metal-free, non-slip spiral shaped and are kind to the hair as they don’t catch and pull the hair.  A bonus with these ties is that they do not kink the hair if you put it into a ponytail or bun.

I hope 2017 is  looking like a great year for you.  See you next week.

Over 50 – everyday make-up look …

img_1324

Today, I thought I would scare you all with an everyday make-up look from start to finish.

After cleansing, toning and moisturising my skin, I used Soap and Glory’s One Heck of a Blot primer to prepare my skin for foundation.

img_1301I have far too many foundations, but today I used Clarins Extra Comfort Foundation which I applied with a brush, and blended it in with a Real Techniques beauty blender. This foundation has full coverage and although I like it, I am not too keen on the smell of it, so I am trying to use it up.

img_1303

My concealer is Maybelline’s The Eraser Eye anti-ageing concealer in light.  I also have this in nude.  This is a great concealer – it does not dry the skin or look caked. I have been consistently using this since I bought it and have already purchased a new one so that I won’t run out.

img_1306

I set my foundation with my favourite powder from Bourjois. Poudré de Riz is a beautiful pale pink, finely milled powder which leaves the skin glowing.

img_1308

I use the Bourjois Mat Illusion Bronzing powder to do a light contour on my cheeks.  This bronzer is a great shade – not too orange.

img_1310

On my eyes I use an Estee Lauder palette.  I used the darkest shade to line my eyes as well.

img_1312

My mascara is from L’Oreal and this is another great find of 2016.  Volume Million Fatale mascara in black.

img_1314

To tidy and  set my eyebrows I used Benefit’s Gimme Brow which is a good shade for me, as my eyebrows are still quite dark, even though my hair is grey!

img_1315

Finally, to the lips.  I recently discovered this incredible lip serum from Dr Organic, Virgin Coconut oil lip serum.  This is the most moisturising lip balm I have found, and you only need a tiny amount.

img_1316

The lipstick I chose for today is a favourite matt lipstick from Rimmel. A great nude shade called Trendsetter (700).

I hope you all have a great week and that 2017 is a brilliant year for you.

lots of love

Dr Organic Rose Otto …

img_1280

I thought I would trial some products from a range not found in the chemist/drugstore, but in the health shop, Holland and Barrett.

I was surprised to find quite an extensive range of beauty products in Holland and Barrett, and decided to try to Dr Organic Rose Otto range. I chose this Rose Otto range as it is specifically aimed at anti-ageing and also firming and toning.  Lets face it, it is definitely worth a shot.

I picked up the  day cream, night cream, eye serum and facial serum.  The range is quite extensive and also contains bath oil, face mask, face scrub, skin lotion, body scrub, hand & nail cream, soap, body wash, cleansing milk, skin toner, shampoo, conditioner and lip serum.

I didn’t pick up the cleansing milk, as I really prefer a balm to cleanse my face, so after my normal cleanse I have been applying the facial serum and day cream in the morning and the eye and facial serum followed by the night cream in the evening.

I have been using these products for about two weeks now, and I can definitely say that my skin is feeling very soft and nourished.

I particularly like the facial serum and I have been looking to try a new facial oil as I have recently finished my Body Shop Oils of Life facial oil.  On a side note, these products smell like Turkish Delight which I love.

So a positive result for this range of products from me so far.  I think I will be purchasing some more products from this range, and possibly try some of Dr Organic’s other ranges.

My Christmas favourites ..

As this blog goes out on Christmas Day, I thought I would write about my favourite Christmas things and share them with you.

Favourite Christmas Book

img_1262

Every year I like to read a new Christmas book to get me in the festive spirit.  But as the years come and go, there is a timeless classic book that I always return to.  Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.  I totally love this book.  I have read this book so many times and feel that it is as relevant today as it was when it was first published in December 1843.

Perfect for Christmas, it is a ghost story, a story of transformation and of hope in human nature to prevail against all odds.  It really is saying if you give kindness, you will be happier for it.

Favourite Christmas Film

img_1265

Corny, I know, but Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life”  is just the best there is.  James Stewart is superb as the suicidal husband and father who is at the end of his tether.  It is a film that has everything in it.  Its funny and sad, and I always cry at the end.  Love it.

The Christmas Tree

img_0050

It’s a bit of joke in our house, but when I say to my children (all now adults) who wants to help decorate the tree, they laugh because they know I like to do it myself.  It just wouldn’t feel like Christmas without a tree.

Christmas Candle

img_1278

There is nothing quite like the scent of a spicy candle to make the house feel festive.  In previous years I have gone with a variety of candles from Yankee Candle and other brands. This year I treated myself to The White Company’s Winter Candle.  This is Christmas in a candle.  Warm, spicy and fragrant.  Gorgeous!

Family

At the end of the day, the family are what make Christmas special.

img_1275

This year I will be missing my youngest daughter, as she is living and working away.  I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and that all those you love are with you to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year!!

Lots of love to you all and heres to a fantastic 2017.

Festive Reds – lipsticks for Christmas

img_1233

If there was ever a season that called out for a red lip, then it is definitely Christmas.  A red lipstick can finish off even the most simple outfit, it shouts out “Hello! here I am and I’m ready to party”.  I have far too many red lipsticks, but I have picked out six of my favourites to share with you.

ESTEE LAUDER 340 ENVIOUS

img_1239

img_1252

A gorgeous red with a deep pink undertone.  It is extremely comfortable to wear and not at all drying.

MUA SHADE 1

img_1243

img_1254

Makeup Academy’s deep raspberry red is glides on like a lip balm, a beautiful shade and a great affordable brand.

MAKEUP REVOLUTION  (name has worn off!!)

img_1237

img_1249

This is a true pillar box red and is such a smooth application.  Also a really affordable brand.

RIMMEL THE ONLY 1 MATTE LIPSTICK 500 TAKE THE STAGE

img_1235

img_1256

I absolutely love this lipstick from Rimmel.  It is a matte lipstick and it stays on forever!  A browny red shade.  Love it.

BENEFIT THEY’RE REAL DOUBLE THE LIP REVVED UP RED

img_1241

img_1258

This lipstick was part of a set from Benefit that came out in the summer.  It has a lip liner built-in which is a novel idea but it doesn’t really work.  None the less, this is a lovely lipstick – a pinky red.

CHANEL ROUGE ALLURE INK 150 LUXURIANT

img_1245

img_1247

This is a liquid lip colour and is actually the first liquid lipstick I have used.  Whenever I have tried them in the past, I haven’t liked the feel of them on my lips.  This one, however I do like, and I love that it actually stayed on all day.  A deep pinky red – perfect.

Well it is almost here.  Only one more week, seven more sleeps and six more shopping days ’til Christmas.  I hope you all have a great Christmas and have all your family and friends around you.

xoxo

December Glossybox review…

img_1230

December’s Glossybox has arrived, and I have to say that I am very pleased with everything in it.

This month there was the option to choose from two lipsticks.  I have so many dark lipsticks that I chose the nude shade and I thought that it might be a bit pale for me, but I actually really like it.  It is from MDM Flow and the shade is Bossy. It feels super comfortable on the lips and not at all drying.  It is a semi-matte lipstick and it gets the thumbs up from me.

img_1217

From Essence, a face luminizer palette.  This is stunning.  A beautiful palette of three shades of highlighting powders, a taupe, a rose gold and a bronze/gold shimmer.  This is a very affordable brand and this retails at £3, which I think is amazing.

img_1222

Gosh is a brand I haven’t tried before, and I am loving this shade of dark green eyeshadow.  It is a glittery shadow, so will be perfect for Christmas and the party season if you like to wear a smokey eye.

img_1224

For those of you who like to set your brows, then Browcote (from the Lipcote company) is a great transparent, lightweight gel that will keep them perfect for hours.

img_1228

Finally, a nail polish from Revlon in the shade Gray Suede.  Revlon claim it lasts for 10 days without chipping.  It is a pinky nude shade and is ultra glossy.  A good staple colour that is great to add to your collection if you are a nail polish fan.

img_1219

Some months, you can find one or two items that you would not normally use, but this month I feel that I will definitely be using all of the products.

Also in the box is a leaflet for the charity Give and Makeup.  This is a great charity that collects beauty products and toiletries for women that have escaped from domestic violence situations and are living in shelters.  To find out more go to carolinehirons.com/p/give-and-makeup.html.

Have a great week everybody. xoxox

Hand creams – a winter essential …

img_1216

I use hand creams all year round, but find I need them even more though the cold winter months, as my does tend to be on the dry side.

The following hand creams vary in price and so there is one to suit every pocket.

SUPERDRUG STRENGTHENS NAILS AND MOISTURISES HANDS £1.99

img_1211

This is a lovely, light cream that is very easily absorbed into the skin and it contains Pro-Vitamin B5 and Sweet Almond Oil.  It doesn’t leave the hands greasy at all and does not have a strong smell.  A great bargain at £1.99.

AVEENA DAILY MOISTURISING HAND CREAM £3.45

img_1209This hand cream also absorbs easily into the skin.  It contains colloidal oatmeal which they maintain, moisturises the skin for 24 hours even if you wash your hands.  I think that is a big ask, and I do find myself applying hand cream several times during the day.  Having said that, I like this cream and it does leave the hands feeling beautifully soft.

PALMER’S COCOA BUTTER FORMULA CONCENTRATED CREAM £1.57

img_1213

This product is slightly heavier than the previous hand creams and takes a little longer to be absorbed into the skin.  It is very rich and if you suffer from very dry hands during the cold weather then I think this would be a great cream to carry around in your handbag.

NEAL’S YARD BEE LOVELY HAND CREAM £10.00

img_1203

This has the most gorgeous smell of orange and honey.  A great product, but on the more pricey end of the scale.  A favourite, and it also raises money to save our bee population. Yay!

KIEHL’S ULTIMATE STRENGTH HAND SALVE £12.60

img_1201

This is a great cream.  I use it every night as it is currently residing next to my bed.  It is quite a thick and oily cream, but just before bed I feel it can do its job in moisturising my hands.  It smells of eucalyptus, so if you are not keen on the smell, then maybe this one is not for you.  A great cream if your hands are really suffering.

CLARINS HAND AND NAIL TREATMENT CREAM £21.00

img_1205

My all time favourite hand cream is the Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment Cream.  It smells divine and it really makes a difference to the condition of my hands.  If I want to buy a gift or treat a friend then this is what I would get. Pricey but worth it in my opinion.

I probably shouldn’t buy any hand creams for a while as I now have quite a few to use up!

Hoping you all have a great week and are not getting too stressed with all the Christmas shopping.

xoxo
